Without adequate preparation for independent life, these young people face high levels of vulnerability and are at risk of:
Being recruited by criminal groups outside the law
Accessing psychoactive substance use early and recurrently
Experiencing labor exploitation and human trafficking situations
Experiencing unplanned pregnancies
Resorting to prostitution as a means of subsistence
In Colombia, the situation of children, adolescents, and young people (NNAJ) in the state protection system presents significant challenges, especially in adoption processes and in the transition toward independent life after leaving protection centers.
Life in protection generates a high level of instability for children because they are moved to different institutions or care modalities. Instability contributes to poor education and personal development outcomes. Emotional and social relationship problems become difficulties these young people face in their daily lives: limited labor insertion, lower income, dependence on the social benefits system, and difficulties adapting to the outside world.
Upon reaching adulthood, these young people are more vulnerable because during their protection process they have acquired few tools to strengthen their life skills. They require accompaniment during the transition from institutionalized life to independent life, since this population truly does not exist in Colombia once they leave protection institutions.
Every young person is unique. Our support adapts to the needs, interests, and pace of each individual, recognizing their strengths and building on them.
We work across key dimensions: education, mental health, employment, and life skills. An interdisciplinary team guides every step of the path to autonomy.
We connect with public institutions, social organizations, and the private sector to expand opportunities for every young person and generate collective impact.
